In 2015 I decided to make a big change in my life. I wanted to push myself to the next level. In order to accomplish this I hired a personal coach. This was a brand new and an eye opening experience for me. I was inspired by so many professionals in the US blogosphere that used personal coaches and written about their experience. It did not seem to matter if they were very successful or not – they still benefited from the experience.

Today, I’m going to share my experience using personal coaching service and what are my takeaways.

Tools for finding balance

It was the need for balance in my professional life that first brought me to explore personal coaching services. I also wanted to be sure to build a business that truly represents my personality and my life’s goals while providing enough income for me to live on. It is such a great thing to be able to wake up every morning and do something that we are passionate about! However, what holds most people back is finding a way to use your passion and skills to generate a consistent income.

When we are caught up in our goals, to-do lists and everyday tasks we find it hard to take a step back and look at the big picture of where we are in relation to our life’s goals. That is exactly the first step you do when working with a personal coach. Looking at our own position from their point of view can allow you to see the opportunity around you. This is exactly what I have discovered: clarity, vision, practical tools, and better decision making skills based on where I really want to go.

I really like this quote: “Your achievement is proportional to your ability to say no to unnecessary tasks” and this is exactly what coaching can provide for you. Focusing on the right tasks, helping the right people and following your goals, which are aligned with your true personality.

Tools defining the challenges

Once you’ve defined where you want to go, you can begin moving forward through regular coaching sessions, which help you set higher goals. This process gives you the confidence to stop worrying about any obstacles or fears. When you and your coach have defined your goals and possible challenges, you will be able layout an action plan working backwards from your goals. This will give you a step-by-step plan to fulfill your vision. Through this experience I’ve learned several practical tools that will help me to work through doubts, fears, and reach the goals that I’ve never thought possible.

Self coaching

In fact, coaching could be optional if you are self-starter and interested in personal development. Developing these traits within yourself can allow you to face your challenges and achieve your goals. However, good coaching services will allow you to move much faster and see opportunities you might have missed. I’ve learned that there are 2 KPIs (Key Performance Indicator) when evaluating a coaching service:

  • How many new ideas the coaching session provided that you never have thought about before? (Or never connecting the dots so quickly)
  • How much clarity have you gained that has lead to solutions and understanding in your life and business? (Often we find that solutions are in plain sight once we have clarity)

Keeping these questions in mind will help you continuously evaluate the coaching you are receiving.

My Conclusion

I have shared my personal experience on coaching and while I admit it is not the only way to achieve your goals, it can provide a faster way for you to reach your set goals and desired end result.
